EmcArts Community Innovation Lab | Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX (2017)

September 27, 2018

EmcArts recently reported on their Community Innovation Lab in Dallas, TX, convened by Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts and their arts and social justice initiative Ignite/Arts Dallas. These university partners joined together with local foundations, non-profits, and community organizations–Big Thought, the Embrey Family FoundationMake Art with Purpose (MAP), and SMU’s Hunt Institute–to confront the question:

“How can we work collectively to ensure equitable access to healthy food and nourishment for and with all the citizens of Dallas, using arts, creativity, and food itself as catalysts?”

In this case the university provided the forum for the consideration of this question. Something that happens every day among professors and students. This case shows how a university might open its doors to its community, to consider both the academic and practical aspects of a question that has a much broader impact.
